How to find the right radiator size for my space?
- Calculate Your BTU Requirement
In order to know what size radiator you need for your space, it is first important to determine the BTU requirement of your room. BTU requirement represents the amount of heat a space needs. Simply input the dimensions of your room, room type (e.g. living room, bathroom) and the methods of insulation in place, and it will instantly calculate the BTU you will need from your cast iron radiator in order to efficiently heat that room.
It is advised to choose a radiator that has your BTU requirement or slightly above, as you can titrate and lower the heat output of a radiator with a higher BTU, but a radiator with a BTU lower won’t be able to fully warm your room adequately. However, keep in mind that a radiator that is far too big and powerful for the space can end up being costly and cost inefficient.
- Assess Your Space
After this, you need to work out the dimensions of the space where you plan to place your cast iron radiator. For accurate radiator width measurement, you need to consider the both the panels and the valves at both ends. Therefore, you’re width measurement should be the distance between the valves at both ends, not the panel itself, as this prevents pipework adjustments. Opt for a similar depth for seamless installation.
If you are looking at replacing an existing radiator, you don’t have to go for a new one that is the same size. The existing radiator might not have the correct requirements for your rooms’ dimensions and insulation capacity, therefore, it is possible to size up or down with your new cast iron radiator. It is important, however, to check that your boiler is able to handle additional or larger radiators before installing, and contact a trained plumber to adjust the piping and valves to accommodate the dimensions of the new radiator.
Alternatively, you could capitilaise on your wall space by opting for a vertical cast iron radiator.
- Cast Iron Columns
Selecting the number of columns your cast iron radiator has is not just a decision based on aesthetics, but it also heat output. The number of columns positively impacts the BTU of the radiator. You, therefore, need to ensure that your chosen radiator has enough columns to at least meet your BTU requirement for the room. Larger rooms with a higher BTU need may call for a radiator with more columns.
Regarding the dimensions of your radiator, generally, the more columns a radiator has, the wider it becomes. Ensure you have enough wall space for the desired number of columns.
- Radiators for Large Rooms
If you are searching for a cast iron radiator for a very large room, one radiator may not be sufficient to reach its’ BTU requirements or efficiently warm the whole room. We would, in this scenario, advise installing 2 (or more, depending on the room) smaller cast iron radiators spread around the room that, together, meet the BTU requirement and more efficiently heat the room.
